Race Season Kick-Off!

Race day started at about 05:00am, I got all my stuff together and headed towards Coronado to make sure that I made it to the parking lot before it closed. The weather started off nice with some cloud cover that held the heat in from the day before, by about 9:00am the clouds lifted and the cold rolled in. The water was a balmy 58 degrees, it actually felt warm in comparison to the air outside. I headed to the swim start and got a quick 100m warm up before having to start the swim. The gun blew at 09:15am for the 30 - 34 age group, the swim was a extra full this year as it included both men and women. I felt good throughout the swim and I was holding the 00:01:30/ 100m pace. I was out of the water and into transition. This year's transition went much better than last year, saving myself 00:01:00. I was off on the bike and feeling good, almost too good as I think I took the swim too easy, the new Argon 18 was well worth it's money as I was pacing on the first 20K to come in under 1hr; however going into the second half of the 20K I could feel the wind starting to pick up and I was afraid I was looking at a positive split. I pushed through the wind and was able to finish out the bike split with a 01:01:50, 7min faster than the previous year. T2 was a quick 1min change, and it was off on the run. The run started out a little sour, the legs were not feeling as strong as I had hoped they would; however I was able to hold a favorable pace - even running throug the sand for about .5 miles. My legs finally released at about mile 3 and was able to start running, I hit the 6 mile mark at 00:40:00 minutes, but at that time I saw the 02:10:00 (quiet goal in my head...) fade away. I hit the finish line at 02:12:20 which was 8 minutes ahead of my verbal "conservative" goal. I felt good and was confident that I had a good race and overall was pleased with the performance. I finished 3rd/60 AG and 35th/550 OA. All in all it was a good day, just not good enough. 2010 goal = 1st place AG and top 15 OA.
