Great Race, Hilly Course! It started out as a little difficult with a panic attack in the water, this has never happened in the past I think it may have been the tight entry at the take-off of the swim. once I reached the first bouy I decided to pull out of the group and get control of my heart rate. I waited for about 2 - 3 minutes before finishing the swim at a very slow pace. Once out of the water I got into my comfort zone which is always the bike. I was estimating a 01:12:00 bike split; however the wind kicked up a little from Saturday so I came in at 01:14:00. And then the run, after sampling the run course a couple of times during the week I was reluctant to assume that I could pick off more than a 45 min run, based both on the terrain and the fact that I hadn't run more that 15 minutes over the past 1.5mo., due to tendonitis in the ankle. The day prior to the race I did a 30 minute session with the compex stimulation machine and had the calf taped with Kenesio Tape. Something ended up working because I ended up running a 42 min flat, which was the fastest Olympic run split to date. It seems like the bike fitness and run fitness are coming along based on closing the gap between my open 10K and Triathlon 10K. Overall I was pleased with the performance based on the quick adjustment to the distance over training for full Ironman events. I would highly recommend this race to anyone interested as it was the most enjoyable overall event that I have competed in.
